Physical Education and Health

The faculty of Physical Education and Health are passionate about developing self-assured, well-balanced citizens who can flourish and contribute to a changing and challenging world. Our teaching program aims to ensure students can participate and contribute to better themselves in the real world; work effectively with others to achieve their goals; understand all aspects of their personal well-being, and understand that where they get to is equally important as how they get there. These values are depicted within the our faculty narrative in collaboration with Ariki designs.

We are proud to offer first-class facilities such as an international Netball size gym, an indoor Rock Climbing wall, Hockey turf and Tennis courts and extensive outdoor field space.

The faculty encompasses three specialist fields including Physical Education, Health Education and Outdoor Education. Physical Education and Health Education are offered at both junior and senior levels and Outdoor Education is available to Year 12 and 13 students as a subject option.

Physical Education

Physical Education at Cashmere High School aims to promote the philosophy of life-long learners who, upon leaving Cashmere High School, are ready for the real world.

In the Junior School, the focus is around physical activity and its impacts on, and influences from, social responsibility, societal interaction, culturally responsive participation and participation for personal growth; including physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being.

In the Senior School students look at wider application of Physical Education. These applications include: Training Principles, Coaching  and Skill Analysis, Risk Management, Biomechanical Analysis and personal skill development.

Health Education

Cashmere High School - Te Iringa o Kahukura has the school vision of “developing both the intellect and the character of our students.” The school values guide everything that we do, and these are citizenship, opportunity, vibrancy and excellence.

We offer Health Education, which gives every student opportunities to develop the values and key competencies of the New Zealand Curriculum. This is guided by the Physical Education and Health Faculty Philosophy in which “the aim is to provide an education programme that will enable students to be self-assured, well-balanced citizens who can flourish and contribute to a changing and challenging world.”

We are growing people under these four principles:

At Cashmere High School, Health Education is taught through a skills-based approach and meets the key competencies in the NZ curriculum. We explore the following skills of: strengthening personal identity; emotional intelligence; leadership; resilience; problem solving; decision making; assertiveness; and critical thinking. We seek to ensure students are given the knowledge, skills and understanding to develop themselves, their relationships with others and contribute to society.

Health Education here at Te iringa o Kahukura is taught by qualified teachers who are trained through Health Education specific courses to identify learning needs and design a learning programme in this subject. This subject is compulsory from Year 9-10, with an NCEA programme from Year 11-13. We also provide a compulsory one term unit of Health Studies to Year 12 students.

Outdoor Education

The Cashmere High School Outdoor Education program is designed to be a challenging course. Students use this challenge to push their personal comfort zone to develop personal and social attributes.

The three main values that are intertwined in the course are:
